I couldn't find these elsewhere so worked them out for myself. Yet another "miseries of being on tour" song then.
I am gonna call that number,
I don't really mean
To wake you from your slumber
While England is asleep.
The hotel is just like yesterday's,
And the city has no name.
It just stands there in a grey haze,
And my room is the same.
Well, I’m gonna call that number,
So far across the sea,
I wish I was in London,
That’s where I wanna be.
I love it when you miss me,
And I'm unhappy too.
Oh please don't you forget me
I am so in love with you.
Yeah, it won't be long now
And even though I know
I seem to leave my heart behind me
Every time I go.
Well, I’m gonna call that number,
So far across the sea,
I wish I was in London,
That’s where I wanna be.
Well, I feel so tired and lonely
I'm thinking of you, lover,
I wish you could console me
May be when it's over ...
I am gonna call that number,
Though I don't really mean
To wake you from your slumber
While England is asleep.
And the hotel is just like yesterday's,
And the city has no name,
It just stands there in a grey haze,
And my room is, my room is the same.
I’m gonna call that number,
So far across the sea,
I wish I was in London,
That’s where I wanna be.

Who sang this song?
ReplyDeleteLyrics written during the 1970s by the late Sandy Denny
ReplyDeleteSung/released by Thea Gilmore, spring 2012 (she also wrote the melody)
Excellent. Hadn't heard it before until they played it over the closing titles for the Olympic Athletics tonight (Sat 11 Aug 2012).
ReplyDeleteI think this will now be a hit, after the BBC played this last night at the Olympics - Great song
ReplyDeleteThank you. thank you, thank you. I have been going out of my mind trying to locate this song. Trawling through BBC iplayer to find the clip and break down the lyrics to get the song title. I am a happy man. I love the rock/folk genre.
ReplyDeleteThis is currently the most popular post on this blog (over 9000 hits and counting). Who'd have thought?
ReplyDeleteStill brings tears to my eyes. Sandy Denny wrote this for her baby girl while away touring. Thea Gilmore has set it to music as Sandy died tragically young leaving her baby girl forever...
