The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

I'm a great fan of the bilingual pun so diolch. Apparently the PÅ·r element probably refers to a 6th century Welsh abbot who may later have been revered as a saint by some (though never canonised). Most of what is known of him comes from the First Life of St Samson.
PÅ·r is said to have become so drunk one night that on the way back to his cell he fell into a well and died soon after being pulled out. He was replaced as abbot by Samson, who resigned in disgust when he found that the young monks had become ungovernable due to the laxity of PÅ·r's rule.

Thanks, Gary. I did not know any of that about the etymology behind Manorbier. I can only add that the castle was used by BBC in 1989 as Cair Paravel in the tv series The Lion, The Witch and the wardrobe. I enjoy your blogging and often buy books on your recommendations. Thank you.
