The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Lord's Day October 23 2016

I expected small numbers today and was not surprised – about 25 in the morning and 15 in the evening. I was feeling a little discouraged but the first person I met asked me about baptism which gave me a little (though as it turned out misleading) encouragement (they have already been baptised). As the Autumn sunshine came through the windows of the chapel I tried to seek God and made some progress, perhaps. Given the circumstances, I chose two isolated texts to keep us going (reworkings of material used in the past) – in the morning Proverbs 24:15, 16 and in the evening Philippians 3:7-9. I think my major problem today was a lack of spiritual fervour, which you can't really blame on anyone but yourself. Hopefully I was able to do some good, nevertheless. God is very gracious.

The Lord rewards faithfulness. The results are up to Him.

How refreshingly honest to hear such a report. And I thought I was all alone in such experiences. At least you'd think that with the ever glowing reports of church plants, growing numbers, increased baptisms and the like. I rarely ever hear of a realistic report on church life. At the risk of being misunderstood, I'm sorry but that's all one ever hears from the leadership of groups like the FIEC. Everything is always so upbeat, glowing, and positive. I sometimes sit down in almost despair and think 'is it just me? Am I the only one who sees struggle, disinterest, apathy, lack of desires to attend pray meetings, or go to both services.' Oh yes, one can recall encouragements, but that is not the general order of the day. At least not in my neck of the woods. Thankful for others who are in the battle too, and have well stood the test of time. Keep pressing on. May the Lord grant us all a better day.

Mike and Stephen Thanks both. Remaining faithful is, however, one of my concerns and I know one can be too negative but I hope it is simple honesty.
