The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Carey Conference 2026 Day 1

So up to Northampton to start the year at the Carey. Great to see everyone. Three main sessions to start

  • Stephane Simonnin on Tyndale. Very helpful, focusing on Tyndale's vision.
  • Peter Williams on the reliability of the Old Testament. Usual soaing stuff on numbers and other issues.
  • Peter Abutu. For some reason the British government would not give a visa to the Kenyan we booked but we were able to get a Nigerian here. He introuduced himself and then preached very helpfully on the perfection of Scripture.
  • We also dipped into the 1689 with Richard Lawrence on Christ being God without conversion, composition or confusion.

Carey Conference 2026

The brochure for the Carey Conference 2026 is out. The main speaker is Peter Williams from Tyndale House. Elly Achok Olare from Kenya is also speaking and others.  January 6-8 in Northampton.

Anchored

On Tuesday I headed down to Guildford for a new day conference called Anchored. About fifty gathered, mainly ministers. Part of the idea is to promote the work of the magazine Reformation Today, now very much tied to the Carey Conference that comes each January. Between 9.30 and 3.30 we crammed in four sessions, two from Jeremy Walker on Scripture in the 1689 Confession, one from Robert Strivens on making better use of church history resources and one from Alex Arrell, one of the pastors in Guildford, who ended the day with a nice piece on Bunyan and his Bibline qualities. On reflection, perhaps Scripture was not the subject we needed to hear most about and some other part of the Confession could have been tackled. It would have been worth putting the chapter on a screen or handout because we are a lazy lot and few had read the chapter recently. More time for discussion too. This was a first try, however, and things rarely fall straight into place. It would be worth trying it again in Spring or next September. Good to meet people.

Carey 2025

The Carey Conference 2023 will be on January 7-9. There is a new venue - King's Park, Northampton. Speakers include Brooks Buser from America and Austin Walker.

Carey Conference 2025

A new venue has been amounced for the next Carey Conference. This time it will not be in Swanwick but in King’s Park Conference Centre, Northampton. No reason is given for the move but Carey has often been quite peripatetic and I have attended conferences in Liverpool, Ripon and Swanwick. Earlier conferences were in Cardiff and other places, I believe.
The dates for this coming conference are Tuesday 7th - Thursday 9th January 2025. The main speaker will be Brooks Buser, who served at one time church planting in Papua New Guinea among the Yembiyembi people. He is now President of Radius International, which trains cross-cultural workers for missionary service among unreached people groups.

Carey 2024 Day Three

We had two final sessions to finish the conference this morning. Paul Mallard gave the second part of his seminar on unconverted children and David Campbell preached his final sermon on holiness - its beauty. I have not mentioned the women's track. Gail Curry was the speaker at two sessions just for the women. A good few days of teaching and fellowship then. How refreshing.

Carey 2024 Day Two

We had another two good sessions this morning - more from David Campbell on holiness and then the first of two more ineractive sessions on
Loving children who do not love Jesus from Paul Mallard. We had a break in the afternoon and then reconvened at five for a mission session which included news of Equipping Pastors Worldwide, EMF, the APCs and GBM. In the evening COnrad Pomeroy spokeagain, this time taking us to John 1:14 and the incarnation.

Carey 2024 Day One

Yesterday I travelled through the rain up to Swanwick, courtesy of Bill Jmaes, to be with a hundred or so others for the Carey Conference. We began with three excellent sessions from Paul Brunning, David Campbell and Conrad Pomeroy.
Paul spoke on very helpfully and thoroughly (and not depressingly) on Spurgeon and his depression. David gave his first paper on holiness from Romans 6. This is the main theme of the conference. Then in the evening Conrad gave the first of two papers from John 1. Just before that we had a ten minuste oresentation of the 1689 confession chapter 5 from John Mark Allmand-Smith. I'd forgotten we do that. No doubt reordings of the addresses will be available at some point. (The 2023 talks are here). Great to be here.
