Red letter day last Sunday. We were in Aberystwyth for the baprism of my oldest grandson, Gwilym. It was a joy to hear is brief testimony and to see him baptised. He has been wanting this for some time but as he is only 11 the church has moved slowly. Lovely to see various realtivs along too. Great to hear a clear baptistic sermon from Matthew 3 from my son and then also to be there in the evening when he preached well on John 3:1-15 and there was a student tea to follow. Nice to meet several students old and new and others. Great Lord's Day.
The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Lord's Day August 18 2024
Last Sunday, once again, I was not preaching. I was in AP in Aberystwyth. In the morning I heard Ian Jones, one of the elders of the church, and in the evening my son Rhodri, pastor of the church, was preaching. Ian is doing a series on perseverance and faithfulness. This time he took us to Hebrews 10:19-29 especially verse 23 and our responsibility to persevere as Christians. Rhodri carried on in Romans 8 with verses 18-27. Very helpful.
Pre-conference days in Aber
We are here in Aberystwyth for the EMW conference. We came up from Cardiff on Friday in order to be at the funeral of Arthur Murray, a godly man who lived most of his life in Aber and was for many years a member in Alfred Place, where the funeral was. My son Rhodri led the meeting and there were tributes from one of Arthur Murray's daughters and Stuart Bell.
On the Lord's Day Rhodri preached twice - from Matthew 5 and Romans 8. A great blessing to be there.
On Monday the church had organised an excellent lecture by Heather Nicholas on Whitefield and his books. (Heather is studying Whitefield at PhD level). This was marking the fiftieth anniversary of the church's bookshop, which began near the station and has been next to the church since 1994. Good sales followed I think. (I bought some volumes myself, including one on Whitefield by James Schwenk, which I'd not seen).
Lord's Day June 30 2024
It was a joy to be in Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, morning and evening to hear my son Rhodri preach two fine sermons on living in the light of the Second Coming and from Romans 6. Good to see so many out in the evening. The meetings were lead by a deacon and an elder.
Stuart Olyott on Romans 12:1
As the Aber committee decided to try not having a Friday night session this year, Alfred Place put on a preaching meeting in Alfred Place, which was packed but is, of course, much smaller. Stuart Olyott preached from Romans 12:1. (He had preached in the church the previous Sunday morning). It was excellent stuff - clear, theological, stirring.
Lord's Day August 19 2018
I was sat listening for once this past Lord's Day. I was in Alfred Place, Aberystwyth and it was the first time my father-in-law, Geoff Thomas, was preaching for the first time there sncehis retirement. It was vintage Geoff, looking at sections from Mark's Gospel. In the morning it was New wine needs new wine skins (Mark 2:18-22) and in the evening Jesus - Mightier than death (Mark 5:21-43). These days the morning service has a short prayer and praise session at 10.30 am with the main service at 11 am. In the evening they met at 5 pm. A good number were present including some still in town after the conference.
Lord's Day August 13 2017
It was good to be in Aberystwyth once again on the Lord's Day. Things are a little different here this year. The EMW dedided that as my father-in-law would not be around they would hold services in the Great Hall, as they do for the conference itself. Peter Greasley and Adrian Brake preached I understand. The services can be found here and here on Youtube.
We went along to hear my son Rhodri in Alfred Place. A few others had decided to do the same but only a few. I'm sure it is not easy for a young minister to have four or five ministers present but if you remember they too need to be fed all should be well. He preached very helpfully from Exodus 3 and Lamentations 3:22, 23. It was wonderful to be there. We sang some of the hymns a capella and that was great. In the morning there was a distrubance. An older man appeared to be choking adn so Rhodri stopped proceedings and we sang a hymn. With a suitable reference to Eutychus he then gave the third adn final point of the sermon.
It was a good day. I was glad to be there.
