The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Midweek Meeting May 7 2025

Among our church members are Eduardo and Anna Marzia. Eduardo is Brazilian and his wife, Anna Marzia is Italian. We met them when Eduardo came to the seminary. For the past nearly five years they have been living and serving in Brazil under the aegis of UFM. There have been encouragemants but things are not working out quite as well as hoped. Currenty we are thinking about Eduardo becoming a pastor back in this country and there is a real possibility in the offing (not here), It qs good to have them at our prayer meetinglast Wednesday then and to hear from them. Their visit is a fying one adn they will soon be back in Brazil. More here.

The world cup had been getting a little predictable. Not tonight it isn't. Score 10 Germany!

Lesser known soccer fact 02

The other lesser known fact to catch my eye is that the only team never to have lost to No 1 soccer team Brazil is lowly Norway (currently around fiftieth place). The teams have met four times. Norway have won two and drawn two. (In 1997 it was 4-2 [in a friendly], in June 1998 it was 2-1 [in the World cup], in August 2008 [in a friendly] it was 1-1. Not sure of the other fixture).

Before the world cup game Olvind Ekeland, a 28-year-old Norwegian, married 29-year-old Brazilian Rosangela de Souza on the pitch before the game. After his "da" and her "sim," fans of both teams joined in a chorus of "Stand By Me" in English.
