I am sorry not to be able to be at the Banner Conference in Yarnfield this year. The first message can be found here. The speaker was Steven Curry looking at John 20. His message concerned our confidence, our example and our need in connection with Christian mission. It was a rousing call to evangelism.

The final session was a conference sermon from Steven Curry. He spoke from 2 Corinthians 12 and made the following points.

1. The Reluctance in Paul's boasting

Paul recognises that boasting is foolish, unspiritual and worldly but still boasts.

2. The Necessity of Paul's boasting

It was prompted by the Super apostles abuse of the Corinthians who were so drawn to them and so were in danger.

3. The Content of Paul's boasting

1 Effort he made 2 Persecutions he experienced 3 Hardships he faced 4 Burden he carried

4. The irony of Paul's boasting

5. The experience that shaped Paul's boasting

From the beginning his experience in the fish basket at Damascus convinced him that weakness was vital.

6. The conviction behind Paul's boasting

When the Christian is weak then he is strong. Our weaknesses are an advantage. God's power is made perfect in weakness.

GBA 2012 07 Steven Curry 2

On this second evening Steven Curry took us again very encouragingly to Revelation 5. Once again we had a very thorough exposition that we cannot go into here.
He had five main points.

1. God is sovereign over history

2. Jesus is the key to history
3. Redemption is the focus of history
4. The church is the aim of history
5. The glory of God is the climax of history
Steven began his message by relating a boyhood incident where he had announced in graffiti as an 8 year old that Steven Curry reigns okay. He ended by pointing out that there is a sense in which believers already reign for God uses our prayers. It is part of his sovereignty. We ought to pray then earnestly for the lost.

For our first evening session Steven Curry took us to Revelation 4 which mentions the throne of God some 12 times and very encouragingly spoke (to be brief) of
1. The encouragement from the throne
2. The description of the throne marked by permanence, glory and power
3. The approach to the throne - the basis, majesty and mercy
(This included a brilliant personal story of ruining a page boy suit as a boy and having it replaced for free)
4. The response to the throne - falling down and worshipping and giving all glory to God

GBM Meetings 2

So I went to hear a presentation by Peter Milsom concerning the work of UFM for my second seminar. Again, very interesting.

About 400 gathered I guess for the evening meeting. featured reference to Naomi Clark, recently married and due to be working in The Philippines with her Filipino husband plus Fiona, Andrzej from Poland, Helen Cook soon to retire from the radio work and Andrew Murfitt from Brazil.

The preacher was Steven Curry from Northern Ireland - familiar to many of us from the Carey Conference. He took us appropriately to Luke 11 and the Lord's words on prayer, especially the parable of the persistent friend. Typically, with a thorough well researched and supported but constantly applied sermon he made five points. These concerned

1. The motive we should be driven by - For the glory of God and out of love for others
2. The patience we must display
3. The boldness we must possess - we should be shameless in our praying
4. The perseverance we must show - the asking, seeking, knocking
5. The willingness we must understand - the example of kindness in fathers

The final session, chaired by Phil Heaps, was given over to a sermon from Steven Curry (formerly in Ballymoney but now pastoring in Bangor). Steven should have spoken last year but was unwell. Typically thorough, clear and warm he took us to Philippians 2 (an adapted Christmas sermon perhaps) and made the following helpful five points. If we are to go on in the ministry in the footsteps of Jesus as true servants of God then

1. We should have an attitude that surrenders position for the sake of the people of God
2. We should have an attitude that serves submissively in obedience to God
3. We should have an attitude that patiently waits in humility to be exalted in due time by God
4. We should have an attitude that puts first the cause of God
5. We should have an attitude that is motivated by the glory of God
