Lord's Day October 6 2019

Last Lord's Day began with one of those unlooked for moments when technology let me down, I write my sermons on my laptop and then transfer them to my kindle. That failed for some reason and so I was forced to lug tthe laptop to church. It is not a large machine but if I put it on the pulpit lectern it can be seen. Typically, when I was ready to start it had turned itself off and when I wanted to input my password, caps lock was on and wouldn't budge necessitating a slight delay. Anyway. we got through it not too distracted. I had chosen last Sunday as harvest  - that is when we sing the harvest hymns and I preach a suitable message - this time on Revelation 14. Before the service it was communion (I again used some useful notes from J C Ryle) and in the evening I preached on the cross from Matthew 27:32-38. It was good to see some missing people back in the morning but some are still astray. It is beginning to become clear who might come to us from the seminary.

Lord's Day October 7 2018

We began with communion - not many there for that but good attnedances morning adn evening otherwise. Lots of Nigerians and Filipinos. I like to preach a harvest message and have us sing harvest hymns once a year and that is what we did this last Lord's Day. I had never tackled 2 Corinthians 9, probably because it is about giving. Glad to look at the subject again, however. We also gave hanks for a new born in the morning. I like to do that as although we do not baptise babies we do not want to give the impression that we are not onterested in them. That's one of the reasons I speak to the children too. We're back on the catechism again at the moment. In the evning we have reached the wonderful fourth century in our church history slot so we sang a hymn by Ambrose (Great old fashioned hymns today) and I preached from Matthew 21 on the parable of the two sons. Part of every Lord's Day is hearing news, especially from members and this week there were two lots of more bad and nore good news. Lots to pray for.

Lord's Day October 1 2017

We're rather late reporting on the last Lord's Day for some reason. Being the first day of the new month we began with communion. I was a little under prepared as I needed to take Eleri to A & E as she appears to have broken her toe, tripping over the day before. The Lord helped me, though. It was harvest in Childs Hill. That is to say we sang some harvest hymns and I preached on a harvest theme - this time three Proverbs that speak about harvest. I also spoke to the children on that theme. In the evening we began on Matthew 14. We were around 40 in the morning and 17 in the evening. There were many missing (including some for yet another week) and no visitors. The sermons were of what we may call a beans on toast variety I guess (nutritious but not exciting).

Lord's Day September 28 2014

I have been back preaching now for a while. At first I managed to stay ahead in my preparation but time has already caught up with me and I am back to a week by week pattern. It was harvest with us on Sunday morning. We don't decorate the church with vegetables and so on but I do like to preach a harvest type sermon (Acts 14:15-17 this time) and we sing those great harvest hymns. In the evening we came to L of TULIP, Limited Atonement, the most difficult perhaps but clear enough in Scripture. There were some missing morning and evening but one or two visitors including people from Ghana, South Africa, Madagascar and South Korea, which added to our international feel (Nigeria, Romania, the Philippines, etc, already represented). 



Lord's Day September 30 2012

It was harvest Childs Hill style last Lord's Day. No produce on display but I preached from Psalm 65 and we sang some harvest hymns. In the evening it was another look at Numbers - Numbers 18 and the principles of service and support. We had no pianist for the first two hymns in the morning but we can manage Come ye thankful people and We plough the fields. We had a number of visitors present which is always encouraging.
