The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Norman Wisdom

The comedian Norman Wisdom has died aged 95. I thought he was one of the funniest things, as a boy. It is difficult to see at this stage why anyone would find him that funny but so much has changed since the fifties and sixties that without a feeling of the period a lot of the humour is lost.

Yes, we bought a set of Monty Python DVDs. It's so dated. Fautly Towers is a little more timeless.
Similarly much biblical humour is lost although surprisingly according to Kenneth Bailey and our own experience with Kurds from eastern Turkey little had changed in the Near East.

I've had the Monty Python experience too. I would guess that a lot of the material never was brilliant but even some of the best stuff does seem rather tired and out of date, somehow. One you explain humour it loses something somehow.
