Midweek Meeting December 2 2015

We carried on with our brief series yesterday on the Three Rs - Revelation, Redemption and Regeneration - looking at redemption, along with reconciliation, substitution, propitiation and justification. I was keen to cover all five subjects in one go and felt I could as the twelve people there would all have come across these terms before but may be a slower approach would have helped. The prayer time was okay - covering everything from Dobbie the cat to the war in Syria! There were a few missing, which was a pity. I'd been under the weather all day but I was keen to be there and glad I went.

So back again in Childs Hill preaching again. What a blessing! We were a decent number morning and evening though there were several missing. We looked at the final verses of 1 Corinthians 7 in the morning and in the evening we considered Romans 3:24-26 (justification, redemption and propitiation). Of course, one regrets the relatively small numbers, the late arrivals and the apparent lack of unction but this is a great privilege and our only hope so we press on. We have a special week of outreach this week so we are looking forward to that. (I found the diagram here).

Murray on redemption

Dr Ferguson quoted John Murray in his commentary on Romans thus:

 

It should be noted in addition that the apostle conceives of this redemption as something that has its permanent and abiding tenancy in Christ; it is "the redemption that is in Christ Jesus". The redemption is not simply that which we have in Christ (Eph. 1:7) but it is the redemption of which Christ is the embodiment. Redemption has not only been wrought by Christ but in the Redeemer this redemption resides in its unabbreviated virtue and efficacy. And it is redemption thus conceived that provides the mediacy through which justification by God's free grace is applied.
