Unusually, I was away
for a second Sunday this last week, this time in Tollington Park.
The Tollington Park is only just over three miles from home but is
quite different in many ways. This is North London, Islington not
Childs Hill, Barnet. TP is an independent Baptist church like
ourselves. Last Sunday they were celebrating the church's 125th
anniversary and the morning service was followed by a lovely lunch
upstairs. They have a small diverse congregation reflective of the
area, a modern building and have been without a pastor for nine
years. This very week, however, they have called Martin Leech from
Welwyn to be their pastor. (Martin and Penny were there in the
morning). This is very good news. As it was a church anniversary and I have been preaching on Acts I spoke on Lydia in the morning (Acts 16) and Antioch (Acts 11).
The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.
