A new week, a new month, a new year. We began yesterday with communion, always a good way to start off. I used some comments on 1 Corinthians 10:6 from John Owen to get our thoughts tuned in. We were packed out in the morning service that followed, especially because people had visiting family. I preached a motto text for the year - James 5:8 - in the morning and then an obvious New Year message in the less well attended evening service from Hebrews 13:8. One element in the evening was someone turning up who we see from time time but who disappeared before we actually started. They said they thought they may be demon possessed so rather unsettling. The preaching as okay I felt but not particularly engaging.
The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

James 5:8 is certainly a good word to sustain through the year. How good to have Jesus Christ, the Same to depend on. (The verse in Hebrews is special to me as these were my father's last words.)
Thanks for sharing.
