The similar phrase 'Worldly Christianity' is one used by Bonhoeffer. It's J Gresham Machen that I want to line up most closely with. See his Christianity and culture here. Having done commentaries on Proverbs (Heavenly Wisdom) and Song of Songs (Heavenly Love), a matching title for Ecclesiastes would be Heavenly Worldliness. For my stance on worldliness, see 3 posts here.

Evangelical Library Wesley & the Odium theologicum
Great lecture last Monday from Roger Fay on Wesley and the odium theologicum. It was a good lecture. It was only a shame that there were not more present. Next one October 26 - Jonathan Wilson on Mile Coverdale.
Library Lecture Last Week
I ommitted to mention the excellent lecture we had last week on zoom in connection with the Evangelical Library. It was the third and fina lecture of the current series. Stuart Fisher from Bournemouth spoke on the forgotten reformer Thomas Bilney. The illustrated talk should be on the Library's Youtube channel soon.
Evangelical Library Lecture on Early English Baptists
We had an excellent Evangelical Library Zoom lecture on Monday from Ryan King. He spoke on Early English Baptists and Liberty. It was a very interesting and well presented lecture simply outlining how early Baptists in England came t what many of us would regard as a biblical view of the way church and state are to interact. It will soon be on our YouTube Channel for your perusal. If you want to go into things further, Ryan has a book on the subject with H&E. The final lecture ion this series is on March 16 when Stuart Fisher will speak on Thomas Bilney. Contact me if you want log in info.
Evangelical Library Lecture on John Newton
We also had a committee meeting after the lecture. Do pray for the work of the Liubrary.
Stan's lecture will soon be with the other thirty already there here - Evangelical Library. Another version of this lecture given at the Reformation and Revival Fellowship Conference towards the end of 2025 can be found here. The next lecture will be from Ryan Burton King on February 23. Subject: Early English Baptists.

It was great last Tuesday to hear Keith Berry giving the third and final zoom lecture of our latest series of lunch time lectures for the Evangelical Library. He spoke on a recent trip to the Czech Republic where he followed in the footsteps of the proto-reformer, Jan Hus (1369-1415). In Bethlehem Chapel where he preached the "six heresies" for whch he was martyred are recalled. They are
1. The Church:
Hus believed the Church was the body of those predestined to salvation, not the hierarchy, and that Christ was the head, not the Pope.
2. Indulgences:
He criticized the sale of indulgences and the belief that they could forgive sins.
3. Communion:
Hus advocated for communion in both bread and wine for both laypeople and priests, challenging the traditional practice.
4. Validity of Sacraments:
He believed the validity of sacraments was dependent on the moral character of the priest, not just their ordination.
5. Criticism of Church Discipline and Organisation:
Hus openly criticised the Church for its corruption and abuses.
6. Wycliffite Teachings:
Hus was accused of adopting and promoting the teachings of John Wycliffe, including ideas about the Bible and Church authority.
Hus said "By the help of God I have preached, still am preaching, and if his grace will allow, shall continue to preach; if perchance I may be able to lead some poor, tired, or halting soul into the house of Christ to the King's supper." When he died he prayed "Lord Jesus Christ , I implore Thee , forgive all my enemies for Thy great mercy's sake ; and Thou knowest that they have falsely accused me and have produced false witnesses and have concocted false articles against me!"
Octavius Winslow EL Lunch time zoom lecture
It was great on Monday to hear Dr Ian Densham speka on the simetimes forgotten preacher Octavius Winslow. Dr Densham gave us a very cmpetnet and interesting survey of his life and work. About 16 of us were tuned in. There will be another zoom lecture on April 14 when Keith Berry will speak about the proto-reformer Jan Hus. The WInslow lecture can be found on the Evangelical Library's YouTube channel. This is the link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR1JkrYwOfs
Evangelical Library Lunch Time Zoom Lecture Robert Strivens
It was good to zoom in once again for a lunch time lecture in connection with the Evangelical Library. Thsi time round it was Dr Robert Strivens on Calvinistic Baptist Colleges in Wales in the 19th century. Being a Calvinistic Welsh Baptist I was obviously drawn but it was interesting anyway. Robert helpfully explained the origins, as far as possible, of the three colleges (Abergavenny which moved to Pontypool to Cardiff, Haverford West which moved to Aberystwyth and Llangollen whoch moved to Bangor). Well worth hearing when it appears on our YouTube channel.
Ian Parry on William Carey for the Evangelical Library
We had an excellent lunch time zoom lecture on Monday from Ian Parry, speaking on William Carey. Normally we have all the ostroy and then a few applications but this was shaped in an applicatory way and so was mor epointed and led to a decent discussion time too. Ian's point about Carey was that unlike us he was surrounded by prevailing corporate prayer due to an initiative from Jonathan Edwards and others before him; there was also a lot of theological confidence in the air and not ust because of the millennial positon many took; thirdly, there was a deep resilience and persistence that comes out in Carey's familiar story (See here for the lecture). We are very thankful to Ian for this very helpful and stimulating lecture.
Next month we travel from Cardiff, Wales to Inverness, Scotland, from where Dr Nick Needham will give us a lecture on Robert Dabney. Again on zoom, it is on October 21. Details from The Library.
Latest Lunch Time Lecture at the Library
There was another online lecture on Monday when Dr Ian Densham spoke on Calvin and worship. This is something of a companion piece to a previous lecture on Luther the Wittenberg Nightingale. We were about twenty or so listening in. The lecture can be found here on YouTube (the Luther one is also there - see here and my own lecture given the previous time = see here). The next lunch time lecture online is from Norman Hopkins on Joseph Ivimey, March 25. Our annual lecture is live at the Library and is on June 3, when David Campebell will speak on Alexander Stewart of Moulin.
Midweek Meeting July 19 2023
Another well attended zoom meeting on Wednesday. We looked at Psalm 62 and then prayed. Plenty to pray about and give thanks for.
Midweek Meeting July 12 2023
On zoom again for a well attended Bible Study and prayer meeting. We looked at Psalm 146 and then had a time of gathering material for prayer which was quite long, relatively, before launching into a time of prayer. That was Wednesday and the next evening we had a members meeting on zoom where we made a number of important decisions.
Midweek Meeting July 5 2023
Midweek Meeting June 21 2023
Another zoom prayer meeting and another look at Galatians 4, this time Galatians 4:8-20. We were about nine and most of us ed in prayer. One newer lady we have with us wanted to give thanks for her plumbing problem being swiftly sorted that day, a real answer to prayer. That was fine though one does not want to give the impression that always answers our prayers immediately or that our own comfort is our main concern. It's hard to handle these things wisely sometimes.
Midweek Meeting June 7 2023
Another good time in Galatians and a good time of prayer as about ten of us gathered on zoom. I think I have mentioned before a lady who sings instead of praying as such. It adds some real variety to the praying. We also have two men, one older one younger who really wrestle with the Lord (if that's the best term) and that 's great.
Midweek Meeting May 31 2023
Slightly reduced in numbers but most prayed. Good time of prayer and Galatians 3 is so full. I thought we might have finishd the chapter bby now but we will need another week.
Midweek Meeting May 24 2023
Good attendance for the midweek meeting on zoom last night. Sadly, I wasn't in the best frame of mind despite a good day preparing from Galatians 3. The devil will get in where he can.
Midweek Meeting May 17 2023
Last Wednesday we were a good number, about twelve I guess. We are now into the heart of Galatians and it is wonderful to realise how much the doctrine of justification is appreciated. Good prayer time too.
