The scutum was the large door-like shield that Roman soldiers used in the first century. Opposed to Christianity at first, the presence of the Roman Empire was a dominant feature of life for the early Christians. In Ephesians 6 the Apostle Paul, no doubt seeing Roman soldiers on a daily basis in his prison, used them as a model for his description of the Christian armour including the Shield of Faith.
