Day off Week 20 2020

The  new shape of the week has left me rater behind with things. Last week's day off got chewed mostly in organising a quiz for the church which we had last Friday. Coming up with a quiz was easy enough but putting it together in a nice way and researching the answers took an age. My piece de resistance - a music round - backfired as it is not easy to play music on Zoom. There was time for  a bit of TV at the end of the day but not much else.

It is common to mock older people struggling with modern technology but I came across two examples recently of young people who just don't quite understand old technology.

The first example was a teenager using a cassette tape and not realising that such an item needs to be rewound to the beginning in order to record onto it.

In the second example I may be being unfair but a teenager I know was not only trying to drink a hot drink straight from a vacuum flask but he also didn't know quite where the liquid would come out and so got tea all over him.

Tomorrow's Dankworth

Johnny Dankworth the British jazz musician died recently. His was a name I was always aware of (mainly through my dad) though not at all up on his music. It is only with his death that I have learned that the theme tune to BBC's technology programme of the sixties and seventies Tomorrow's World - a tune I always liked -was by Dankworth. This is the whole piece. If I remember rightly Tomorrow's World would be on at 7 pm on a Thursday immediately before Top of the Pops - a good hour that used to be (although we had a regular visitor around then every week who would always talk to my mam right through most of the hour).

Persecution complex

I read this today on the Barnabas website. It's not mentioned anywhere else and I can't vouch for its accuracy. It is amazing the lengths some people will go to.

Officials in a Middle Eastern country have produced Bibles with cell phone microchips hidden inside the covers. The aim was to trace the location of the Bibles and thus track down Christians. Several house churches were discovered in this way and their members arrested, but most were released after signing papers promising that they would not meet again. Pray that our brothers and sisters will be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16)

Ansgar the monk gets to grips with the new technology 2':38". I've been there. They are speaking in Norwegian. The skit is six years old but has more recently become a Youtube hit.
